It all began in 1936 when George Winterhalder, while employed with Santa Cruz Lumber Company, saw a business opportunity and formed the San Lorenzo Lumber Company along with fellow employees James, Newt and Bob Maddock. The company was young and enthusiastic. With many friends in both the lumber business and surrounding communities, they provided a friendly, more informal atmosphere than their competitors. Strong family values and close community ties, proved to be a winning combination and San Lorenzo Lumber Company flourished.
In 2003 San Lorenzo was purchased by Lumbermens and then changed the name. In 2006, the 100 year-old Lumbermens chain became Pro-Build. In March 2014, ProBuild renamed the local store back to its historic name: San Lorenzo Lumber & Home Centers.
